Day 3 - #obediencechallenge - Food

If you want to know what this is all about, see my intro post at 30 Days to Better Faith.

Let's talk about food. God told us what was food and what wasn't. Certain things he told us were unclean to eat because of the nature of the respective animals' diets. Pigs are unclean because they have a very short digestive time (less than a day) and they're scavengers which eat (among other things) feces, other dead pigs, garbage, etc. This is similar to shrimp, crab, lobster, clams and oysters. They are bottom feeders, which clean up the "yuck" of the ocean floor. Those are the practical reasons behind God telling us not to eat them, because He doesn't want us to be sick! God knows better than us, and this is an area where we need to trust that, wouldn't you agree?

It's hard to make these changes at first. For instance, I was a bacon and pepperoni fanatic. Couldn't live without it, I thought, but it's been 3 years now and I haven't touched it. Do I miss it? Yes, not going to lie. But there are great alternatives. Beef bacon is amazing! It tastes EXACTLY like pork bacon. Forget turkey bacon, it's a farce. Turkey pepperoni is REALLY close to pork. There are alternatives if you feel like you're missing out. Regarding fish, you can eat any fish that has both fins AND scales. Not just one of those, it should have both. So catfish, lobster, crab, oysters, crawfish are out. Again, this likely has to do with the cleanliness of the diet and how it processes it.

Leviticus 11 lays out all the dietary laws, so I encourage you to make that your reading for today. You may find you want to read even more, and that's great!

So the challenge today is to cut these things out of your diet, in obedience to the Father.

Here's a handy reference guide (click to enlarge):
You may be asking yourself what this has to do with the Church, and aren't all these laws just for the Jews? And weren't they done away with at the cross? Actually no, and we'll cover that tomorrow on Day 4.
